Coming up with ideas for a lifestyle family session can be challenging! I’m here to help. Let’s think outside the box, and maybe inside your home instead. Not that there is anything wrong with going to a park, but at-home sessions certainly have the benefit of fewer distractions. They also provide an environment for everyone to feel comfortable in! Lastly, they can be a good way to show off that new kitchen renovation you just had done, or the new living room set you just purchased.
Here are five ideas if you’re looking to stay home but want to mix it up a little bit.
- Cook together. Whip up a batch of cookies, waffles, or maybe even decorate some cupcakes! Creating family engagement around an activity you all love makes for great photos, not to mention the reward of eating it at the end.
- Let me photograph your favorite way(s) to play together. Whether that’s jumping on Dad’s back while he lays on the floor, or chasing each other around the coffee table, finding something that makes your toddler smile is always a win. For older kids, I think family leaf fights or water-gun battles can be a great way to end the session!
- Blow bubbles! Bubbles are classic, and combined with the right light, they can look like prisms and rainbows.
- Read a book together. Maintaining a toddler’s attention is no small feat, and those photos that document the in-between moments of full concentration are priceless. It can also be sweet to have an older sibling read to a younger one.
- Play a board game, if that’s your style. A rousing game of Bananagrams or Monopoly can excite the whole fam, and ensure plenty of grins.
Hopefully these ideas for a lifestyle family session will encourage you to consider using your home for your next photo shoot venue! But of course, there are all kinds of ways to make your family pics unique.
