I love finding unique spots for photo sessions, and using the east wing of the National Gallery of Art for engagement photography is one of the best!
Why is one of my top locations for engagement photos in DC?
1. It doesn’t require a permit. So many places require an expensive permit, or have a difficult application process. National Gallery of Art engagement photography is free! As long as I don’t bring a large camera bag, tripod or light stand, security lets me right on through.
2. Variety. I’ve got so much to work with at a National Gallery of Art engagement photography session. One of my favorite features is the light sculpture in the concourse tunnel connecting the East Building to the West Building. It’s called Multiverse, and created by Leo Villareal. Some might argue it’s truly out of this world! (Sorry, I couldn’t NOT include a pun.) Walking around the East Building is an easy go-to for me, partly because of all the great natural light on a sunny day, and partly because the building itself is a work of art! Check out the modern and contemporary galleries for some very cool backgrounds. Lastly, the blue rooster on the rooftop is a fun not-to-miss feature.
3. Location, location, location. The NGA is very accessible. It’s only a few short blocks from a metro station or bus stop, or you can have a ride share drop you off right at the front door. If you’re brave enough to drive, street parking is usually very doable during the weekday. (Though I suggest getting there plenty early to search for a spot, and expect to have to walk about half a mile.) Not to mention, the museum is right off of Pennsylvania Ave, so pausing to pose quickly (and safely) in the bike lane offers an amazing background view of the US Capitol building. You can check out the angle in the last photo of this post.
If artsy locations are your vibe, here’s another engagement session I photographed at the National Portrait Gallery!
